Malangen boasts beautiful and distinctive nature offering a taste of both fjord and mountains. In the Municipality of Balsfjord, you will discover the Malangen Peninsula. Here in this natural gem, you can enjoy business or pleasure on the water’s edge or in the mountains.
The majority of the Malangen Peninsula is located in the Municipality of Balsfjord, while a small part of the peninsula’s outermost area is located in the Municipality of Tromsø.
Balsfjord is Northern Norway’s largest agricultural municipality, with a population of around 6000. Malangen was formerly a municipality in its own right and in earlier times the locals said that the municipal boundary also marked the boundary for grain cultivation. Malangen has long been regarded as one of the most desirable areas for holiday homes/cabins.
The peninsula’s beautiful and distinctive landscape is characterised by fjords. The peninsula is home to around 500 households.
The largest settlements are Vikran, Malangseidet, Meistervik and Mortenhals. The Municipality of Balsfjord covers a large area varying from fertile agricultural areas to wild mountainous areas. In all, 12 peaks rise to a height of more than 800 m above sea level, of which seven exceed 1000 m.
The 60 km long Malangen Fjord stretches from Hekkingen Lighthouse off the coast of Senja to the village of Nordfjordbotn. In the inner part of the fjord, it branches out into four smaller fjords – Nordfjorden, Aursfjorden, Målselvfjorden, and Rossfjorden. Malangen Fjord is well regarded for its plentiful fish stocks, with herring and coalfish having had the greatest significance. The peninsula’s interior features excellent lakes for fishing as well as good hunting terrain.
