Full-day cycle trip

-         See and experience more of Malangen...

To see and experience more of Malangen, we recommend a full-day cycle ride around the Malangen Peninsula. The full circuit is around 80 km and includes some challenging hill climbs, but otherwise flat, sealed roads.

The circuit starts from Malangen Brygger and heads left towards Mortenhals following the main road beside the fjord. You pass Mortenhals and Sand School, the Folk High School 69°N and Malangen Church, which dates from 1853. The stretch from Mortenhals to Vikran is around 30 km and it′s a good idea to include a good rest here. At Vikran, you will find the ferry landing, shop and postal counter. You can also try your fishing luck from the wharf. Just off the coast of Vikran is the island of Ryøya, which is home to a breed of musk ox. The University of Tromsø is conducting research on these animals and they live freely here. It′s quite possible to catch a glimpse of the musk ox when they are grazing down by the water′s edge.

The road continues by turning left from the ferry landing and you then follow the Balsfjord. You will have a good chance of spotting a white-tailed sea eagle here. You will pass Kragsletta and then Malangseidet, where you can see the memorial monument erected at Malangseidet in 1937, when the local boat sunk and 11 people lost their lives. After Malangseidet, you leave the fjord and turn right on highway 858 in the direction of Meistervik. You will encounter an even incline over the Malangseidet moors before you come to the lake Nordbyvannet. You need to keep left at the intersection here and continue straight ahead towards Meistervik. Turn right at the Ludvik Pub and from here it is just 8 km back to Malangen Brygger.

Malangen Brygger hires out cycles and cycle helmets. We recommend you take the following with you: food, camera, bag for berries and mushrooms, drink and spare clothes.
