In November 2008, a decision was made that work could commence on a 2675 m underwater tunnel between Kvaløya and the Malangen Peninsula in spring 2009. If the project goes to schedule, the tunnel will be completed by early summer 2011. The opening of this tunnel will reduce the travelling time between the city of Tromsø and Malangen Brygger.

Eight construction companies are currently competing for the contract to build the tunnel.
